Tactical Turtle Cartoon (Azaleaville Wildlife Alliance)

The Pasadena Auto Theatre operated in the 1950's and early 60's in the Pasadena neighborhood, south of Azaleaville, and featured mostly westerns and monster movies. The snack bar sold a necessity — mosquito coils — flat, coiled sticks made of a dried paste of pyrethrum and sawdust that burned on the dashboard like incense.

Life in the 1950s:

No microwaves — leftovers warmed on the stove.
Milk delivered in glass bottles to your door.
Rotary phones with long, curly cords.
Television in black and white, only a few channels.
Typewriters instead of personal computers.
Drive-in movies instead of streaming at home.
Iceboxes and early refrigerators, no frost-free.
Canned tuna casseroles and Jell-O salads on the table.
Gas was under 25 cents a gallon.
Children played outside until the streetlights came on.

Tastes & Times of the 1950s:

Spam sandwiches packed in lunchboxes.
TV dinners served in foil trays.
Coca-Cola in glass bottles with paper straws.
Jell-O salads with marshmallows and fruit cocktail.
Tang and Ovaltine instead of energy drinks.
Soda fountains and malt shops on the corner.
Cheese Whiz spread on Ritz crackers.
Hot dogs and baked beans at every cookout.
Banana cream pies cooling on the windowsill.
Popcorn popped on the stovetop — no microwave bags.
