History

The Azalea neighborhood was once home to a famous golf course. The Jungle Country Club was a historic golf course and hotel located in the Jungle section of St. Petersburg, Florida. The course opened in 1916 and became known as Babe Ruth’s favorite place to play during the winter. Photos of the era’s biggest celebrity golfing in St. Petersburg appeared in newspapers across the country, boosting tourism and helping to popularize the game. Today, the original golf course property and hotel building, now part of Admiral Farragut Academy, are in the Azalea neighborhood.
